British Virgin Islands (BVI)

February 2025: BVI

We either got really lucky or this is real life in the BVI but it was one of our favourite sailing destinations. We had the perfect weather for the couple of weeks we spent there - great sailing conditions and in great company! We had family and friends visit us and this island definitely makes it easy for hosting guests. We winged, kite surfed, snorkelled, sailed, explored and everything in between and it still felt like we didn’t have enough time so if we ever head back to the Caribbean, this will be one of the spots we’d like to spend more time in! We also found the mooring system quite organised and easy to use as the Boaty Ball App is used in the BVI - red balls are pre-booked, white ones are first come first serve - pretty simple!

Here’s why we thought these islands were a cruising heaven:

1) The weather is warm, dry and the perfect easterly wind blows through in the “winter” time.

2) Tides and currents are minimal making it easy to navigate, anchor, swim etc

3) Multiple islands mean there are numerous anchorages and islands to visit and they’re pretty close to each other!

4) Easy mooring options, although the BVI had some busy anchorages, their online mooring booking system is seamless and very easy to use, not too mention well taken care of mooring balls!

5) Diversity of activities makes it easy for you to kite, wing, snorkel, hike, swim, you name it! There will be an island around that you can find the perfect spot for any activity!

6) Fun atmosphere as there are a range of restaurants, bars, full moon parties… there are a few epic locations that really made the BVI special, including Saba Rock, Bitter End Yacht Club and Coco Maya!

7) Safety is always top of mind and we felt super relaxed and safe around the islands in the BVI. Immigration is usually where we get a glimpse of what’s to come, and they were some of the friendliest officers we’d met so far in the Caribbean (and we did immigration a few times as we headed in and out of the BVI to USVI).

8) The Airport was by far the easiest airport pick up and drop off location, not to mention you can walk out the airport a few meters and you’re at the dinghy dock! As an anchorage to wait for the guests, it was also quite nice and there are anchorage or mooring options around depending on the weather!

9) Easy provisioning, although not the cheapest, made it pretty easy to find fresh produce around the BVIs but we had stocked up in the French Islands on the main products as we had heard they would be the cheaper of islands to stock up before reaching the Dominican Republic!
